300Magazine is pleased to share the news from the fascinating world of art: the incredible King Nyani by the famous global public artists Gillie and Marc is already in NYC. The monumental bronze sculpture inspired by King Kong is installed in Bella Abzug Park at Hudson Yards, inviting everyone to enjoy an interactive experience unlike any other. The art installation is aimed at showing the gentle and loving side of the gorillas and to encourage people to take action before we lose these amazing creatures forever. The artwork will be on view in NYC through the end of May, 2021.

King Nyani is the largest bronze gorilla in the world, weighing over 4,700 pounds and measuring 8.5 feet high and 23 feet long. It depicts a mountain gorilla silverback reclining on his side and leaning languidly on his hand. One of the gorilla’s palms is open, and it is large enough to fit 3 people, inviting everyone to sit and relax. Initially inspired by King Kong, this impressive sculpture actually depicts the real gorilla that Gillie and Marc met on their trip to Uganda. King Nyani is based on the dominant silverback, the head of the family of mountain gorillas living in the wild, whose level of kindness and empathy was completely different from the more common image of the scary gorilla that we often see in media.

King Nyani is much more than a beautiful piece of fine art created by talented artists for people to enjoy. It is a reminder of how war, poaching, and deforestation have drastically reduced gorilla numbers so that some species are now struggling to survive. The sculpture is installed in NYC to help raise people’s awareness of the issue and to attract more attention to the endangered animals across the world. It allows everyone to get closer to the mountain gorillas, both emotionally and physically, and to realize how gentle, loving, and caring they can be.

The giant gorilla sculpture is one of many bronze animal sculptures by the Australian collaborative artist duo Gillie and Marc. The couple is known for creating some of the most innovative public sculptures, spreading messages of inspiration, equality, hope, and love around the globe. Their special spiritual connection to the animal world has led to a whole series of gorgeous works that can be found today in public sites and art galleries in over 250 cities. King Nyani is now part of this friendly family, and he is sure to become no less popular than Gillie and Marc’s iconic Rabbitwoman and Dogman, the artists’ beloved hybrid characters telling the story of two opposites coming together to become soul mates.
