Save the Children and the Allstate Insurance Company have joined forces to benefit Gulf-Coast-area children and young people living in extreme poverty as part of the two-night, star-studded “Idol Gives Back” Charity event that recently aired on Fox network’s popular “American Idol” television program.
Designed to raise awareness and funds for poverty relief programs in the US and Africa, the television event aired Tuesday, April 24th and Wednesday, April 25th .
The event had added positive impact to Gulf Coast residents. Allstate gave a $1 million matching donation to directly support Save the Children Charities programming concentrated in the Gulf region.
The next step in the process is to disperse the funds. Save the Children plans to devote Allstate’s donation to their Early Steps to School Success program, a cradle-to-classroom intervention program for children at high risk of struggling in school. Early plans are to focus funding in Marion county in Louisiana and St. Helena county in Mississippi.
Building a strong foundation for school readiness is a core program goal and is achieved through home visits by teachers; parent education groups; toddler story book hours and play groups as well as structured activities to promote early language and literacy skills along with social and emotional development. As children enter school, Save the Children provides after-school literacy programs and nutrition education.
